Bridges of Slovenia

A cover from Slovenia with the Europa 2018 stamps

The Cobblers' Bridge over the river Ljubljanica in the centre of Ljubljana's Old Town is one of the best known twentieth- century bridges in Slovenia. Built between 1931 and 1932 to a design by architect Jože Plečnik, it replaced a narrower cast-iron bridge dating from the nineteenth century. Plečnik conceived the bridge, which is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists, as a town square above the water. The reinforced concrete bridge structure rests on a pier in the middle of the river. The pier is pierced by two arches. Plečnik complemented the balustrades on either side of the bridge with tall columns that were originally intended to support a pergola made of wooden beams, over which climbing plants would be trained. For reasons of economy, the pergola was not built and Plečnik instead topped the columns with concrete balls.

Puh Bridge over the Drava on the outskirts of Ptuj is named after the inventor, mechanical engineer and vehicle manufacturer Janez Puh, better known as Johann Puch (1862–1914). It was built between 2005 and 2007 during construction of Slovenia's motorway network, to plans by civil engineer Viktor Markelj and architect Peter Gabrijelčič. The bridge was built in a period when the conviction had taken root that the design of the area around a motorway should not only take into account views from the road itself, but also views of the road. Accordingly, Puh Bridge, with its distinctive structure, has become an identi able symbol in the wider environment. It is the most attractive of the 210 bridges built between 1994 and 2011 in the context of Slovenia's motorway construction programme
