Bridges of Germany

A postcard from Germany - with the Europa 2018 stamp - showing the city of Dusseldorf with its magnificent Oberkassler bridge - and the Rheinkniebrucke ( Rhine knee bridge )

Düsseldorf is one of the economic centers of Germany and is located along the River Rhine in the densely populated Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area. The city is famous for its nightlife, carnival, events, shopping and for fashion and trade fairs like the Boot Messe (one of the world's best trade fairs for boats and watersports) and Igedo (world leader in fashion).

The Oberkasseler Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge designed for road and light rail traffic between Düsseldorf city center and the Oberkassel district across the Rhine. Worldwide attention was given to the first shift in this dimension of the 1969 to 1973 built further north bridge in their present situation. It was carried out on 7 and 8 April 1976 after the demolition of the temporary bridge, which replaced the originally built (1896 to 1898 ) Oberkassler bridge after its demolition shortly before the end of World War II.

The Rheinkniebrücke is a cable-stayed bridge over the Rhine at the Rhine knee in Düsseldorf with a six-lane motor road and two combined pedestrian and cycle paths, which was opened to traffic on 16 October 1969.

The Rhine is one of the longest and most important river in Europe. It runs for over 1,232 km from its source in the in the Swiss Alps (in Switzerland). The Rhine flows through six countries -Switzerland, Principality of Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, France and the Netherlands before flowing into the North Sea at Rotterdam. As the Rhine enters Germany it becomes the border between Germany and France. Finally the Rhine reaches the Netherlands , a completely flat country, where it joins several other rivers on its final journey to Rotterdam and the sea.

The other stamp is a 2017 definitive - hasenglockchen  - 20c
