Bridges of Romania

A cover from Romania !

The stamps are the Europa 2018 bridges stamps , and one of the Romania - Estonia joint issue on forest species !

It is interesting that the previous cover from Estonia had the same stamp from Estonia showing the Rowan shrubs ! Quite a coincidence, eh ?

Europa Bridges :
Bridge of Lies , SibiuThe Bridge of Lies is a bridge that can be found in the old center of the magnificent city of Sibiu, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. This is Romania’s oldest cast-iron bridge and it was built in 1859, taking the place of an older wooden bridge. The three legends that are connected to this construction piece are older than the cast-iron bridge and the stories date from long ago when there was only the wooden bridge. The name could have originated from one of the three legends associated with this bridge -

1. The bridge creeks and makes a weird noise if someone speaks a lie on this bridge
2. Anyone who cheats in the market area nearby was thrown off this bridge as a punishment
3. Any girl who lies about her virginity to a boy on this bridge gets thrown off the bridge.
Today, The Bridge of Lies is the pride of Sibiu city. On one side of the bridge you can see the date of the structure, on the other the Saxon blazon, which depicts two swords put in cross-way and a crown on top of them.

Anghel Salighny Bridge -

The Anghel Saligny Bridge(formerly King Carol I Bridge) is a  railroadtruss bridge in Romania, across the Danube River, connecting the cities of Cernavodă and Feteşti.The bridge was built between 1890 and 1895 over the Danube, the Borcea branch of the Danube and the Balta Ialomiței island, and when it was completed, with a total length (with viaducts) of 4087.95 m, it became the longest bridge in Europe and the second longest in the world. The bridge was designed by the Romanian engineer Anghel Saligny.

The two cities on the banks of the river which was built were Feteşti on the left side and Cernavodă on the right side. The two bridges have a length of 2632 m of which 1662 m over the Danube and 970 m over Borcea, and are 30 m above the water, allowing tall ships to pass under it. The entire bridge was inaugurated on 26 September 1895, and as a test on the opening, a convoy of 15 whistling locomotives sped at 60 km/h, followed by a train reserved for 'guests', at 80 km/h. Anghel Saligny stood on a boat right underneath the bridge when the train sped above for testing the bridge .
