The Channel Islands - Crown Dependencies

A postcard from Jersey Islands

A postcard from Sark Islands - Guernsey 🇬🇬

The Crown dependencies are three island territories off the coast of Great Britain that are self-governing possessions of the Crown:
the Bailiwick of Guernsey,
the Bailiwick of Jersey and
the Isle of Man.

They do not form part of either the United Kingdom or the British Overseas Territories. As the Crown dependencies are not sovereign states, the power to pass legislation affecting the islands ultimately rests with the government of the United Kingdom .

  • the Bailiwick of Jersey, comprises the island of Jersey and uninhabited islets such as the Minquiers and Écréhous
  • the Bailiwick of Guernsey, comprises  the islands of Guernsey, Sark, Alderney, Brecqhou, Herm, Jethou and Lihou.

Sark  is a part of the Channel Islands in the southwestern English Channel, off the coast of Normandy, France. It is a royal fief, which forms part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, with its own set of laws based on Norman law and its own parliament. It has a population of about 500. Sark has an area of 2.10 square miles. Sark is one of the few remaining places in the world where cars are banned from roads and only tractors and horse-drawn vehicles are allowed.

Guernsey Post is the postal service for the island of Guernsey, Channel Islands. It includes a Philatelic bureau, and regularly issues both definitive and commemorative stamps. It also provides postal services for Sark. In contrast to the United Kingdom, Guernsey Post pillar boxes can be identified by their distinctive blue colour.

Jersey Post was established (as the Committee for Postal Administration) by the Post Office (Jersey) Law 1969, as a result of an Order in Council which enabled the Crown dependencies to establish independent postal services. Jersey is postcoded as the JE postcode area, established between 1990 and 1994 as an extension of the United Kingdom postcode system.

Thanks Tom for these postcards from your holiday :)
